LSR injection · LSR overmould

LSR overmoulding.

LSR flows easily, fills thin sections and bonds to many substrates when the grade and preparation are right. That makes it the usual choice for soft-touch surfaces and seals moulded straight onto a rigid part.

The detail

Getting the bond right

The bond is the whole point of overmoulding, and it depends on three things: the substrate material, the LSR grade, and what happens to the substrate before it goes in the tool. Self-bonding LSR grades exist for many engineering plastics; others need a primer.

The substrate also has to survive the tool temperature without distorting. We check that early, because a housing that warps in the tool can't be fixed by better silicone.

How we run it

How we run it

  1. Substrate review

Material, heat tolerance and surface condition checked against the LSR grade.

  2. Bond strategy

Self-bonding grade, primer, mechanical interlock, or a combination.

  3. Load and mould

Substrates are loaded into the tool, often by fixture, and the LSR is injected around them.

  4. Bond testing

Peel or pull tests on samples from each batch, recorded against the batch.

Questions

What people usually ask.

Can LSR bond to metal?

Yes, usually with a primer and a mechanical lock designed into the metal part.

What's the difference between this and overmoulding generally?

This page is about liquid silicone specifically. Our overmoulding page covers solid silicone and rubber routes too.
