LSR injection · Optical-grade LSR

Optical-grade LSR.

Clear silicone shows everything: flow lines, bubbles, dust and tool marks. Optical-grade LSR work is about tooling, handling and cleanliness as much as the material.

The detail

Why clear silicone

Optical LSR stays clear across a wide temperature range, doesn't yellow the way many plastics do, and is flexible enough to double as a seal. That combination suits LED lens covers, light guides, clear keypad windows and sight glasses.

The difficulty is that clarity is unforgiving. A tool polish that's fine for a black seal will show on a clear lens. We treat optical jobs as a separate category, with their own tool finish, handling and inspection.

Where it fits

Common optical parts

LED covers and lenses

Clear or diffusing covers that seal a light source against water and dust.

Light guides

Flexible guides that carry light from a board to a panel indicator.

Clear windows in keypads

Transparent sections in otherwise opaque keypads and buttons.

How we run it

What changes for optical work

  1. Polished tool surfaces

Optical faces are polished to suit the finish you need, from clear to deliberately diffused.

  2. Gate placement off the optical area

Gates and vents sit away from the faces light passes through.

  3. Clean handling

Parts are handled with gloves, kept away from dust and packed so faces don't scuff.

  4. Visual inspection under light

Parts are inspected under controlled lighting for bubbles, inclusions and flow marks.

Helpful to know

01

Clear or diffused

Do you want to see through it, or spread the light evenly?

02

Which faces are optical

Mark them on the drawing so we can keep gates and parting lines away.

03

Operating temperature

Near hot LEDs, the grade choice matters.

04

Acceptance criteria

How many inclusions of what size are acceptable. We'll agree limit samples with you.

Questions

What people usually ask.

Will clear silicone stay clear over time?

Optical-grade LSR is chosen for its stability. We'll talk you through the supplier's data for the grade we recommend.

Can you mould clear and coloured in one part?

Often, yes, through two-shot moulding or overmoulding a clear window into a coloured body.

LSR overmould

LSR flows easily, fills thin sections and bonds to many substrates when the grade and preparation are right. That makes it the usual choice…

LSR micro parts

Some silicone parts weigh less than a paperclip. At that scale, handling, inspection and packing matter as much as the moulding itself.
